My Phone Got Wet in Miami: What to Do in the First 10 Minutes

June 16, 2026 · 5 min read

We live in a city where afternoon downpours arrive with no warning, and pools and the beach are part of everyday life — which is why wet phones are one of the most common cases we see at our Kendall and Hialeah stores. What you do in the first 10 minutes after it happens can be the difference between a device that fully recovers and one with permanent damage.

Do this immediately

  • Take it out of the water and power it off completely — don't leave it "to see if it still works"
  • Dry the outside with a cloth or towel, without rubbing the ports
  • Remove the case, screen protector and, if possible, the SIM card
  • If it has a removable battery cover, take that off too
  • Bring it in for a checkup the same day — the sooner, the better

Don't do this, even if you've read it online

  • Don't put it in rice: it doesn't absorb internal moisture and gives corrosion time to spread
  • Don't charge it or plug it into a computer while wet or damp
  • Don't power it on to "test if it works" — every power-on with internal moisture risks a short circuit
  • Don't use a hair dryer with heat: heat can damage the battery and other components
  • Don't shake it hard: this can push water further into the device

Why time matters more than anything else

Pool water, seawater, or even tap water contains minerals and salts that start oxidizing the components on the board from the first contact. That corrosion process doesn't stop just because the phone looks dry on the outside — it keeps progressing inside for hours and days. That's why a device that comes in for a checkup the same day has a much better chance of a full recovery than one that waited a week "to see if it would dry out on its own".

What we do at NOUS MOVIL REPAIR

We open the device, clean the board and components with electronics-grade isopropyl alcohol (and ultrasonic cleaning when needed), dry it professionally, and inspect it under a microscope for active corrosion. If we find damaged components, we give you the exact price before repairing anything. The diagnostic is free, so you lose nothing by bringing it in as soon as you can.

Frequently Asked Questions

My iPhone is water resistant, so nothing will happen, right?

Factory water resistance degrades over time, drops and seal wear, and Apple itself states that liquid damage isn't covered under warranty. Even with a recent iPhone, we recommend powering it off and getting it checked after significant water contact.
